Today marks the day my husband turns 35. He is officially in his mid-thirties and I'm sure you can agree that such a monumental birthday requires an extravagant celebration. An over-the-top 35th fiesta was in order, inspired by Hubs & Hers taco tees and an excuse to incorporate tequila, complete with DIY margarita jell-o shots and authentic sombreros.
Normally, we opt out of big gifts, a tradition that began when we joined bank accounts, but I got sneaky this year. I can't stop smiling just thinking about my husband's face when he saw his birthday gift, definitely not a regular wife's gift; a custom conventional salt water fishing pole with 'Mr Farina' engraved on it. We'll be getting that rod wet today, ladies and gentlemen, as the birthday boy requested his day be spent fishing, with his wife by his side, despite her susceptibility to sea sickness.
The cherry on top of this 35th birthday sundae was a photoshoot featuring the original Local Lovers, my gemini & I.
The extravaganza I concocted in my mind would be far out of our comfort zones. Our annual celebration of my husband's birth usually consists of a low-key trip to Islamorada with 1-2 of our closest couple friends, some snorkeling gear and as few photos as possible. We are still far from the days of taking out the jet for the weekend, so we were thrilled when Privaira asked us to come play on their private charter jet. They even finagled their friends at Exotic Dreams Rentals to bring over a couple of Rolls-Royces for the afternoon. This would be the perfect back drop to curate Mr Farina's too-glam-to-give-a-damn birthday shoot and we knew just the photographer to execute our plan.
It was a brilliantly gray, not-so-breezy afternoon with a heat index of a trillion. The gorgeous, side swept miracle that The Sandy Shoppe created out of my mane had no chance against the Florida humidity. Shoutout to Gennesis for applying more make up on my mug than I'd ever know what to do with. Just the thought stepping into that 100% wool Lord & Taylor two piece pants suit I thrifted for $9.50 brings tears to my eyes and my ass crack. As expected, I'm nervous from the start. You guys know I'm a behind the scenes kinda gal at heart. Thank god my husband is standing right next to me looking like a snack.
Now, as I sit here and ferousciously type about my own discomfort, I must give Mr Farina a standing ovation. Instead of rolling his eyes, he rolled with the punches, changing from one suit to the next. Fashionably over layered for this blistering heat, but looking cool and collected, per usual. Jean jacket off, leather jacket on. PUFF, PUFF (he's had a thing for cigars since I brought him home a Cuban). Faux present boxes in one hand, big, black 3-5 balloons in the other. Hello, this was a curated b-day shoot. Holding my hand, carrying vintage suitcases, casually tossing me up on the wing of the plane and snagging 'candids' with the Polaroid.
Seriously, I lucked out with this guy.
